Earth Day & Every Day: Building Sustainable Communities
Posted by Harold Pacheco
The 2021 Earth Day theme of “Restore Our Earth” celebrates emerging green technologies and innovations that help create a more sustainable and livable earth for everyone. As a developer, Cameron Corporation plays a unique role in ensuring we are building communities and services to support our fellow Albertans while being cognizant of ensuring we are building a smarter future for all.
“Although we founded Cameron Corporation 40 years ago, we strive to be known as the 100-year company because we build everything to stand the test of time. By constantly innovating and building sustainably, we create projects that enhance our community while minimizing our environmental footprint and reducing costs for our tenant clients.” – Cameron Naqvi, Cameron Corporation President
How Do We Build Smarter?
At Cameron Corporation, we want to ensure our developments enhance the community, with a focus on quality and sustainability in each project. By incorporating sustainable features into our developments, we save enough energy to power almost 66,000 homes each year – or about 12% of metropolitan Edmonton’s households.
LED Lighting: Throughout all development properties, LED lighting is standard. Using LED lighting instead of the traditional high-pressure sodium (HPS) bulbs represents energy savings of about 50%. With more than 800 light bulbs throughout shopping centers and apartment buildings that means 471,306 MWh in energy savings (or 471,306,000 kWh). Based on an estimate of 7,200 kWh to power a single-family home per year, that represents energy savings equivalent to 65,459 homes!
Solar Panels: Installed on office buildings, multi-family apartments and shopping center, solar panels contribute to energy savings of 213 MWh each year. You can find solar panels on Edmonton Business Campus, Emerald Hills Urban Village and the Harmony at Walker Lakes and Harmony at the Market apartments. These energy savings are equivalent to powering 30 homes and include more than 210,000 kg of emissions saved.

EV Chargers: Supporting the use of hybrid and electric vehicles, our electric vehicle (EV) chargers have powered 6 mWh to shoppers, visitors, and tenants at outdoor shopping centres and apartment buildings. Additionally, we have supported several tenants that have installed their own EV chargers at South Edmonton Common.

Altogether, the LED light posts, EV chargers and solar panels combined provided an estimated savings of 280,000 kg of C02 emissions, helping make our communities more sustainable and future-forward. Not included in these calculations are the sustainability efforts of our many environmentally conscious tenants, including EV chargers and solar panels at IKEA, MEC and Canadian Tire!
Other Sustainable Features:
- Living wall: The green wall at Edmonton Business Campus provides living art for all visitors in addition to its air-purifying benefits.
- High-efficiency homes: The Cameron Homes name is synonymous with quality, and high-efficiency features like spray foaming all exterior outlets and the attic come standard.
